Aging Up



Due to the nature of the game and various legal considerations, both players and characters must be above the age of 18. However, canon characters between the ages of 14 and 18 may be ‘aged up’ for game purposes in one of two ways:

1) If the character is from a completed canon, they may be aged up by saying that they continued to live in their canon world for the past few years. Keep in mind that this time must be spent doing things that fit with a continuation of the canon ending point. Try to keep the themes and personality consistent with those of canon, but do remember that part of growing up is mental and emotional maturity, not just getting taller. A basic explanation of what your character has been doing and how this time caused them to mature is expected on your application.

If more than one character in a canon is apped in this way, castmates may either collaborate on making their histories mesh up, or choose to regard each other as “AU” if they can’t be reconciled. This is the only type of “non-canon AU” that will be allowed in the game, and we’d like to make them as realistic and true to the original themes and stories as possible.

2) Your second option is to have the character get ‘lost’ in the Rift on their way to Sanctum. No one really understands what the rift is or how it works: while it deposits people in the world and sometimes takes them out again, there’s no way to directly access it or study it. For most people, the travel between one place and the next seems instantaneous, however, for the occasional person... it’s not.

Imagine drifting in what seems like nothingness. There’s no sensory input, no feeling of body parts at all, no vision or sound, at first. Then, after a stretch of nothing, there start to be vague visions on the backs of the eyelids, thoughts and feelings, and finally a full immersion into what appears to be a compilation of experiences from the lives of others to pass through the Rift. The information is always quite benign, just insights into everyday life, never anything horribly shocking or upsetting, or at least... nothing that seems so at the time. Technological differences and cultural differences are things that are set aside by the mind to be thought about later, and the ultimate result of these visions and feelings is that the character winds up feeling as if they’ve lived through various types of ups and downs in life.

The amount of emotional and mental maturity gained through seeing glimpses of other people’s lives can vary a little from person to person, but keep in mind that a person who went into this experience at fourteen certainly won’t come out still on the same level. It’s not like watching a few movies - it’s a full experience that can last several years, consciously and without any break in the input. If anything, some characters with very narrow worldviews might come up not just more mature, but a little more open-minded, so keep this in mind.

When the character does arrive in the park, they will be a little disoriented from the shift from these experiences back into their own “self”, and take a couple of days to integrate things properly.
