OC Application
This is the application for Original Characters. Please keep in mind that original characters will be judged more critically than a canon character app because your application is, in fact, the only information we have for the character.
To apply please send your application to sanctum.mods@gmail.com with the subject of your email as [Application: Original | Character Name]
Player Information:
Name:
Age:
Contact info: (personal lj, IM usernames, email, plurk, etc)
Characters currently played at Sanctum, if any:
Character Information:
Name: Please note that character's names should be listed in the manner that is appropriate for their culture.
Canon point: For OCs this is simply a matter of what was happening to your character when they were pulled in by the rift.
Age: We will not be accepting any OCs that are under 18 in their original worlds.
Appearance: Because an original character, like a book character will have attributes that a PB will not be able to convey we require both a written description as well as the PB you will be using.
World: Where does your character come from? What year, what planet, what country. What type of setting is it? This section should tell us everything from the genre for the world the character’s story comes from. (Steampunk, sci-fi, urban fantasy, epic fantasy, crime/mystery) to the details about their home town, their living conditions. The overall attitudes of the world you’re drawing them from should also be included. Culture, laws, education... even the smallest changes in perceptions can affect all of these things so be sure you are thorough. The more different your character’s world is from our own the more important this becomes.
History: This section is for your character’s story. What makes them who they are? What has happened to form them into the person they are today. This is especially important because as an original character there is no book or movie for us to refer to here. This is your one chance to tell us all there is to know about the character.
Personality: This is the section not to skimp on! We want to know how your character thinks, acts, talks, dresses, moves... as much as you can think of about what makes up who they are. Please take your time and think about both the character’s motivations and their outward selves. Be sure to include character strengths and weaknesses here, as well.
Sexuality: This isn’t a space for a one-word answer. What we want to see is how you view your character sexually overall. Not just what gender or physical sex they are attracted to, but how much sexual experience they have, what their cultural ideas about sex are, what negative or positive attachments to it they might have.
Skills and Powers: This is the place for any particular skills and powers the characters have! Be sure to elaborate on things useful in everyday life as well as combat or supernatural powers.
If your character has a dimension-hopping power, please be aware that it will be disabled. Any other teleportation powers will remain intact, except if the character is in police custody or similar plot reason. For characters who are canonly deities or extremely powerful, please be prepared to have them scaled them down if it becomes ICly necessary to avoid ‘breaking the game.’ Any power-scaling you would like to do voluntarily, list here!
For characters without canon superhuman powers, there will be points within the game where they can gain powers, ICly, after they are in play.
Items: What is your character coming into the game with? What do they keep in their pockets? Is there anything of sentimental value that they keep on their person at all times. What is important to them? This is also where you would note if you plan to have a pet or animal companion accompany your character.
Writing samples: All samples do need to be set within Sanctum’s game setting, and give a good idea of how you will play your character in-game!
Action: The easiest way to do this would probably be a post to the network, either written to be soon after your character’s arrival in Sanctum, or after they’ve been around for a while. If you want to write something else in action style - perhaps your character exploring some part of the world - feel free to do so.
Third Person Prose: For this sample, feel free to use an NPC for minor interaction, if you like. However, be sure the focus is on your character and their thoughts and actions. Feel
free to be creative within the game environment, whether it’s your character’s first reaction or something that might happen after they’ve been around for a while. Length isn’t as important as quality, but please give at least a couple of solid paragraphs.
In World: For original characters, we would like an additional prose sample, in any form you like, showing the character interacting in their home world. Give us a feel for how your character interacts with their surroundings on a daily basis. You can chose to illustrate a “day in the life” or something more dramatic from the character’s recent history. Ideally your history and world overview will give us enough information to contextualize a snippet out of the character’s life. If you find yourself needing to explain anything more than your characters reactions through the writing you may need to go back and expand on previous sections.
Plans: This is where you tell us about the themes that you would like to explore and what you're interested in trying out with your character. This is especially important if you are playing a villain or a character whose canon actions go against the theme of the game. Give us an idea how you intend to play them within the confines of the game rules without sacrificing canon characterization.
