Communication Device
When a newcomer registers with the Information Booth, they are also issued a “Thingamabob”. This helpful little communication device looks like a small flat rectangular piece of plastic, and has the letters TMB emblazoned on the surface. There’s only one button - a slider that turns the Thingamabob on and off, and a holographic menu displays when the device is turned on. This menu offers many options, from video/voice/text chat to accessing personal funds, GPS, and acting as a recording device. With proper knowledge of the interface, one could also use a Thingamabob to play games and store files, though they do sometimes glitch if you run too many programs at once.
Each Thingamabob comes loaded with a starting fund of 600T. This means that you can either a) go shopping and live in the hostel or b) pay for a cheap apartment for a month and live frugally. The Thingamabob continues to act as the sole access for any sort of buying and selling in the city. This means that anyone who decides to discard the device will have difficulty acquiring food, lodging, and any kind of goods. Payment for services and work is made directly onto the device, and funds can be transferred between them through the menus, while holding them together. Technically, they can be stolen, but TMBs are also highly traceable, so it’s a risky prospect. Destroying them is perfectly fine and legal, as long as the owner is the one doing the breaking, but just means that any funds on it are lost. A replacement can be retrieved at the information booth, but will come with a negative balance. For more on money, go here.
The standard communication program allows for calls and posts to individuals, to groups, and public ones to the community at large. These posts are to be made to the the network community. Anything on the network is assumed to be public unless otherwise labelled, and is free game for characters to see and act on. Keep that in mind while plotting, please. Hacking private posts is possible, for someone who has the patience and skill, but should always be done with permission from the player making the post.
